Name: Catharine Brierre
College: University of Tulsa
“I joined TRC Juniors at the beginning of my sophomore year in high school. Pretty soon after joining the team, I discovered my passion for rowing and during my time spent as a member of TRC Juniors, I remained committed to that passion for the sport. Early in my high school rowing career, I discovered that rowing was a sport that could provide me with a college athletics scholarship to a number of universities.
Once I set my mind on the idea of trying to obtain a college rowing scholarship, everything I did in my time spent with the team was aimed at the ultimate goal of being offered a scholarship. Being a member of TRC Juniors helped instill in me the commitment and teamwork needed to be successful at the collegiate level. It also helped me to find an activity that I was really passionate about and commit myself to taking my success to the next level. The single most influential event that I experienced in my time as a member of TRC Juniors came during my junior year of high school when I had the opportunity to be a member of the girls 4+ that went to the Head of the Charles regatta in Boston. It was at this race where I realized that there is a whole other world to rowing that we rarely see coming from a land-locked state with only two high school rowing teams. The excitement and hype over the regatta, with some 300,000 spectators coming to watch the races, made me grasp the concept rowing is a huge sport that many people appreciate. After this regatta, I truly knew that rowing competitively was something that I wanted to continue for a long period of time.”
